Local Dad a Winner in Safe Speed Promise
Bull Creek father-of-two Ian Chapman has earned a $600 Margaret River getaway by making a promise to drive within the speed limit.
Mr Chapman signed the Safe Speed Promise which put him in the draw for the weekend for two.
City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said the Safe Speed Promise was a joint effort between the Cities of Melville, Cockburn and Fremantle which calls on residents to commit to: keeping within the speed limit; being a courteous and careful driver; and slowing down to consider cyclists, pedestrians and other road users.
“I would urge all residents to take Mr Chapman’s lead and sign up for this important pledge, which will help make travel safer for yourself and your family,” he said.
A teacher in West Swan, Mr Chapman said he signed up to the ‘Promise’ because he wanted to help spread the message out to parents about safe driving.
“I strongly believe this campaign has a message that everyone needs to pay attention to, and something we especially need to get out to parents,” he said.
“I’ve seen some parents drive above the speed limits within a school car park itself, so it’s definitely something I’d like to see get through and make sure they’re conscious of driving safely on main roads as well.
“My daughters and I have a long drive out to West Swan each school morning, and I’m always conscious that I am setting an example to them in my own driving.
“I believe all residents need to make the promise as well, for their children and other people’s families to help keep our environment safe.”
Mayor Aubrey said the Safe Speed Promise initiative was aimed at making roads safer for residents and visitors to the three Councils.
“This campaign is about uniting residents across three Councils to reduce travel speeds by reminding drivers of their commitment to a safe speed and respect for other road users,” he said.
Tragically, 193 deaths were recorded in Western Australia in 2010.
