The City of Melville has encouraged residents to enrol in a sustainability course to learn how to save on power and water, grow their own food, have a healthier lifestyle and improve on energy efficiency in the home.

The Living Smart course will be held at the Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre in Winthrop.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the Living Smart course was for anyone who was concerned about their health and the planet’s future.

Living Smart is a great way to learn about how you can become more sustainable. The course will look at: saving power and water; re-considering transport, healthy homes and lifestyles; growing your own food; and retrofitting your home,” he said.

“The practical, hands-on course will be facilitated by experts in environmental sustainability who are personally committed to making their lives more sustainable and have been running Living Smart courses for over three years. The course facilitators have backgrounds in education, art and building and together they make an informative team.

“A wide range of topics will be explored with lots of time for thinking and sharing with others. Living Smart will enable you to see a positive future for yourself and your community.”

The Living Smart course will run for seven weeks on Thursday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, starting on Thursday, 6 May 2010. There will be special outings and a hands-on gardening session. The cost for the seven week series is $20.00.
