Lifestyle Services Shave Heads for a Cure

Published Date: 16 November 2011, 12:00 AM

On Monday, 14 November 2011, the City of Melville’s Lifestyle Services’ team dramatically shaved their heads to raise money and in a show of support for Health Club Supervisor Phil Leroy, recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma – a cancer of the lymphatic system.

Lifestyle Services has so far raised over $2000 and the money will be donated to Lymphoma Australia.

Mayor Russell Aubrey congratulated the 16 participating staff members and encouraged recreation club members and Melville residents alike to donate to the worthy cause.

“Phil is a very fit person who has completed many triathlons so his diagnosis demonstrates that anyone can be affected by cancer,” the Mayor said.

Mr Leroy, who was diagnosed in September 2011, said, “I’m about to receive my third round of chemotherapy but I still exercise regularly and I am not letting the cancer change my life.”

“My message to others is to get regular check-ups and ask questions of your doctor. If you are diagnosed with cancer, it’s important to maintain a normal routine and stay positive.”

Mayor Aubrey added, “Lifestyle Services was keen to lend a hand with this fundraising because Phil has worked at the City of Melville for about seven years and is such a well-known character. We are proud to support Lymphoma Australia and, on behalf of the City of Melville, I wish Phil a very speedy recovery.

“In keeping with the health message of this campaign, the City promotes good health and vitality and offers excellent recreation facilities at the Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre and the Melville Recreation Centre. If all our members and, indeed, everyone affected by cancer, donated to this worthy cause, we would raise a great deal of funds for cancer research.”
