Library Lovers’ Competition Sets Winners’ Hearts Racing

Five lucky winners were awarded hampers on Friday, 27 February 2009 after entering the City of Melville’s Library Lovers’ Day competition.

The presentation, held at the Civic Square Library in Booragoon, concluded the Library Lovers’ Day celebrations held across the City’s libraries last month.

To enter the competition, library devotees were asked to express in written words why they loved their library. One entry was then chosen from each of the City’s five libraries, and the winners were presented with hampers on Friday.

The winners of the Library Lovers’ Day hampers (pictured) were Margaret Clampit (Willagee Library), Sally Peters (Civic Square Library), Zoe Atkinson (Canning Bridge Library), Frances Moon (Bull Creek Library) and Anne Acton (A.H. Bracks Library).

Civic Square Library winner, Sally Peters, wrote: “I love my library because it is one part of my life that has ‘stood the test of time’. Like an old friend, the library is always there willing to help and guide you with all the services it provides. Bravo to the City of Melville Libraries!”

Ms Peters said she was excited to have won a hamper full of goodies. “The library does enough for the community without giving prizes as well,” she said.  “Whether it’s for research or pleasure, the library is always my first port of call.”

Mayor Russell Aubrey presented the hampers and thanked entrants for their expressions of passion. “With more than 330 applicants, this competition was an expression of passion in a very public way,” he said.  “Library Lovers’ Day was a great opportunity for library-goers to express love for their library and to celebrate the diversity of services available.”

Library Lovers’ Day started as a State Government initiative that went national in 2007 after a hugely successful event in New South Wales the year before. This was the first time City of Melville libraries participated in the event, which appeared to be thoroughly enjoyed by the community.
