Library and Information Week Celebrated with Calendar of Events

Published Date: 12 May 2010, 12:00 AM

The City of Melville’s libraries are celebrating Library and Information Week (24 to 30 May) with a range of activities including a writing workshop, story time session and new database launches.

Chief Executive Officer Dr Shayne Silcox said there was a lot to celebrate.

“Last year the City’s libraries made 1,006,300 loans, read stories and baby rhymes to 12,000 preschoolers, welcomed 47,000 active library members and were visited 750,000 times," he said.

“These statistics demonstrate that City of Melville libraries are providing an important service for a very large group of residents.

“Despite the recent State Government funding cuts, the City of Melville libraries have also developed an excellent program of activities for Library and Information Week.”

City of Melville Libraries Coordinator Clare Coney said the week’s events would appeal to a broad audience.

“An increased number of literary databases will be launched across the five libraries and online, including Who Else Writes Like, Good Reading Online and Tumble Books for children," she said.

"These databases offer a range of user-friendly search information including the ability to discover a wider range of authors and titles.

“In addition, a writing workshop at Civic Square Library will provide aspiring writers with the opportunity to hone their skills and express their inner creativity. In this three-hour workshop, participants will learn how they can access a spontaneous flow of ideas and words in various situations.

“For children, the National Simultaneous Storytime will see groups across Australia read a book about a dog with short legs who can’t jump into the car. This national event promotes to children the value of reading and also promotes an Australian writer and publisher. It will be held at all five City of Melville libraries.”

CEO Dr Shayne Silcox said, “I encourage residents to visit a City library during Library and Information Week (24 to 30 May) and I commend the City’s library service during this special time.”
