Learn About Big Birds and Bush Survival at Piney Lakes

Published Date: 27 March 2008, 12:00 AM

Children and adults alike are invited to Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre in the April school holidays to take part in free activities and find out just what the centre has to offer.

The self-sustainable centre will host a presentation about raptors on Monday, 14 April, 9.30am to 2.00pm, and hold a bush survival workshop on Monday, 21 April, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Additionally, the community can learn about sustainability and the environment at the centre throughout the holidays.

Environmental Education Officer Belinda O'Brien said the raptors presentation would give people a chance to see these amazing big birds up close and discover why they are becoming endangered. “Marra Apgar from Raptor Presentations will fascinate participants with her knowledge of these huge birds and will bring along her pets for all to enjoy,” she said. “I will then take participants on a 20-minute tour of the Piney Lakes bushland and point out some fascinating parts of the reserve. The day will finish with a BYO picnic lunch in the beautiful surrounds of the centre.”

Ms O’Brien said the bush survival workshop would allow parents and children to learn ways to look after themselves in the harsh Australian bush. “The workshop will be run by Vanessa from Bob Cooper Outdoor Education and topics will include how to find water in the bush, alternative fire-lighting methods and recognising poisonous and edible plants,” she said. “Following the two-hour course, there will be a BYO picnic lunch.”

For bookings, phone Ms O'Brien on 9364 0790. If you would like to receive the centre’s monthly electronic newsletter, email bobrien@meville.wa.gov.au. For more information, visit www.melvillecity.com.au/pineylakes.
