Published Date: 24 January 2012, 12:03 PM

The newly-refurbished community facility, Kadidjiny Park Hall in Melville, has been declared open today (Tuesday, 24 January 2012) by City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey, Federal Member for Fremantle Melissa Parke and Chair of the More Community Group and lessee Yolanda Cool.

The refurbishment is the result of a $143,000 grant from the Federal Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (RCLIP) and project management by the City of Melville.

The Hall, which was once the Melville Primary School library, has received a new kitchen, a wheelchair accessible toilet, new flooring, internal painting, a refurbishment of the existing toilet, new storage facilities, air conditioning and new eaves.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the renewal of this community facility was project managed by the City and completed in just one year.

“I wish to express my sincere thanks to the Federal Member for Fremantle Melissa Parke for granting the RCLIP funding, which made this refurbishment possible. The Hall’s multi-functionality truly complements the idyllic location in the stunning Kadidjiny Park,” he said.

“I also acknowledge and warmly thank the More Community Group for their advice on the refurbishment and for voluntarily administering the Hall’s bookings. There is now a wide range of community organisations happily using the Hall ranging from play and theatre groups, a youth organisation, a local symphony orchestra and a church Sunday school.”

Melissa Parke congratulated the City of Melville and the More Community Group for their vision and effort in bringing this project to fruition.

“The Kadidjiny project is a fantastic example of partnership between local and federal government to achieve a great grassroots outcome.  These refurbished facilities provide much better and more accessible facilities for the entire community, including people with disability.”

Chair of the More Community Group Yolanda Cool said, “The community’s reaction to the upgrade has been fantastic - the user groups are very happy with the refurbishment and improved facilities.”

Kadidjiny Park Hall is located at Kadidjiny Park on the corner of Curtis and Kitchener Roads, Melville. Community groups wishing to book Kadidjiny Park Hall can email the More Community Group at morecom2006@gmail.com.

Background

The four-hectare Kadidjiny Park was officially opened in November 2010 and includes unique elements such as a whimsical tree with a hand-carved face, musical instruments, an undulating playscape, embankment slides, sand play equipment, barbeques, boardwalks, a
wetland area, an amphitheatre-style seating area, exercise equipment, public artworks and walking paths.

Kadidjiny is a Noongar word meaning ‘learning, thinking, listening’ and acknowledges the site’s Noongar history and the park’s location on the old Melville Primary School site.
