Judges Select Striking Art Award Winners
The winners of the 2011 City of Melville Art Awards have been announced today (Friday, 27 May 2011) by Chief Executive Officer Dr Shayne Silcox at the official opening at the Civic Centre in Booragoon.
The three judges, who assessed a competitive field of 280 entries for 13 awards, were Professional Art Educator Peter Lowe, City of Melville Curator Soula Veyradier and Textiles Teacher Louise Snook. The cash prizes ranged from between $500 and $1,500.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said this year the calibre of the entries was particularly outstanding.
“It was very challenging for the judges to find only 13 winners from such a large group of entries but I think they have made an excellent final selection. The winning artworks represent a wonderfully diverse range of mediums and subject matter,” he said.
“The Highly Commended entries also represent a very impressive group of artists.
“Of course, the People’s Choice award is voted on throughout the exhibition and will be announced when the exhibition finishes.”
The 2011 City of Melville Art Awards Exhibition is held at the City of Melville Civic Centre, 10 Almondbury Road, Booragoon from Saturday, 28 May to Saturday, 4 June 2011.
The exhibition is open from 9.30am to 4.30pm weekdays and from 1.00pm to 4.00pm on weekends. Entry is free.
An online gallery of the City’s art collection is now available at www.melvillecity.com.au/arts, where the acquisitions from the 2011 competition will be displayed when the exhibition closes in June.
