Joint Urban Art Project Nearing Completion
The City of Melville, in conjunction with the Public Transport Authority (PTA), is working towards having the Bull Creek Train Station Urban Art Project completed by the weekend of 24-25 October 2009.
The painting of the train station's entry wall follows on from an earlier project in 2008, focusing on the station's underpass.
Community Development Officer – Youth, Callum Prior said, after the success of the urban art pieces placed along the Perth to Mandurah rail line, the City of Melville approached the PTA about coordinating another project involving local young people.
“The successful project applicant, artist Dan Duggan, has since been working with a small group of young people to design and paint the entry wall at the Bull Creek Train Station. As part of his proposal, Dan selected one young person to mentor throughout the entire project – from the purchasing of materials, through to the design process, installation of final artwork and anti-graffiti coating,” he said.
“The other participants were selected from those who take part in the City’s PHAZE community art project, which involves engaging young people to create their own artwork at Leeming Skate Park on a monthly basis. The young people are provided with materials and – under the supervision of a professional urban artist – paint their own designs, making the skate park a vibrant place where they feel safe to express themselves,” he said.
Deputy Mayor Patricia Phelan said the City of Melville was grateful to the PTA for its support, with the Bull Creek project set to contribute to a growing number of public art pieces in the City. “The process has provided young people with an opportunity to work with a professional community artist and develop their own skills, confidence and passion to potentially pursue a career in the arts,” she said.
“The Bull Creek Urban Art Project is also part of the City’s shared vision of achieving a Safer Melville, as it provides a legal and safe space for young people to engage in urban art. Through Safer Melville, the City plays a support role in working with the community, State Government agencies, and other stakeholders to achieve sustainable community safety and crime prevention outcomes,” she said.
