Published Date: 08 December 2009, 12:00 AM

The City of Melville – a long-time supporter of Neighbourhood Watch – on Friday, 4 December 2009 hosted a State Government event to recognise the tireless work of Neighbourhood Watch volunteers. A number of the volunteers present were given Certificates of Appreciation for their service and a special morning tea.

The event, coordinated by the State Neighbourhood Watch Office and Office of Crime Prevention, was attended by Minister for Police Rob Johnson, Attorney General and Minister for Corrective Services Christian Porter, and Deputy Mayor Rasa Subramaniam. Also in attendance were Neighbourhood Watch State Office State Coordinator Brian Scully, Neighbourhood Watch State Office State Director Bernie Durkin, and WA Police Director Strategy and Performance Assistant Commissioner Barbara Etter.

Deputy Mayor Rasa Subramaniam, who spoke on the day, said the City was proud to host the event. “The City supports and promotes Neighbourhood Watch and has an active Neighbourhood Watch group which works tirelessly to promote safety and reduce preventable crime in the City of Melville. All members are volunteers and generously give their time to participate in activities and initiatives that promote safety and crime prevention,” he said.

“I would like to acknowledge and thank the City’s volunteers for their time and efforts to promote safety and crime prevention in our local community. The City of Melville has been a long-term supporter of Neighbourhood Watch and will continue to support and promote the initiative into the future,” he said.

Manager Neighbourhood Amenity Brodie Dawkins said Neighbourhood Watch was a community-based program aimed at promoting safety and reducing preventable crime in the City. “Neighbourhood Watch is about encouraging neighbours to get to know each other and to look out for each other and their properties, and is a vital part of achieving the City’s shared vision of a Safer Melville,” he said.

Congratulations on the above presentation, it does warm the heart when volunteers are rcogbised in this way, if we can reinforce our efforts with more volunteers then we may cut the apathy that exists in todays society, well done C.O.M. As a NHW suburb manager of Bateman for the past 15 + years we never seem to be pushed out of the way by someone "younger" to take over those duties on a daily, weekly - monthy basis, once again well done, sorry I missed it.

It is very encouraging and much appreciated to get such positive feedback from our community. The City was proud to host the State NHW volunteer recognition event in 2009 to celebrate volunteering, and thank all volunteers for their tireless efforts and contribution to the community. The City particularly wanted to acknowledge the City of Melville NHW volunteers and the contribution they have made to NHW in the City of Melville, as well as to celebrate their achievements in working with the community to promote safety and reduce crime. We look forward to the continued participation of all NHW volunteers in the City of Melville.
