Immunisation Numbers Remain Strong in the City
Mayor Russell Aubrey has reported that attendance figures to the City of Melville’s free, immunisation clinics have remained strong, demonstrating that residents are convinced about the benefits of immunising against serious disease.
Between 1 June 2008 to 31 May 2009, 758 children were immunised by the City of Melville and a total of 1,823 vaccinations were administered. The following year, during the same period, it was slightly higher - 770 children were immunised by the City and 1,894 vaccinations were administered.
“These figures show that while residents remain informed about the minor risks associated with immunisation, they understand the benefits are far greater,” the Mayor said.
“Immunisation is a proven tool for controlling and even eradicating infectious diseases. For instance, small pox has almost been erased thanks to immunisation and polio has also been wiped out. The younger generation takes this for granted but if immunisation rates were to drop significantly we would see a return of such life-threatening diseases.
“I commend City of Melville parents for demonstrating a responsible and sensible approach to vaccinations. This not only ensures the health of our children but also the health of the broader community.”
The City of Melville provides a range of free immunisation services to children, adolescents and adults and conducts two, free immunisation clinics at the following locations:
· A.H. Bracks Library
corner Stock Road and Canning Highway, Melville
This clinic is held every 2nd Friday of the month between 1.00pm – 3.00pm
· Melville Civic Centre Main Hall
Davy Street, Booragoon (Located adjacent to the City of Melville offices and Civic Square Library). This clinic is held every 4th Friday of the month between 10.00am – 12.00pm
“The City of Melville also provides free influenza and pneumococcal vaccines to any person aged 65 years of age or older,” the Mayor said.
