Local gardening enthusiasts will have an opportunity to learn a range of gardening techniques from environmental scientist and passionate green gardener Josh Byrne.

The Gardening Australia television presenter and writer will run a three-week course, beginning on Tuesday, 1 July at Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre.

Josh will teach participants techniques to develop a productive, edible garden on an average sized block of land in Perth. Topics covered will include water shortages, organic waste management, urban biodiversity and designing, establishing and building a green garden.

Environmental Education Officer Belinda O’Brien said Josh demonstrated practical and innovative ways to create a productive, water-efficient and beautiful garden environment. “Josh believes that many of today’s pressing environmental challenges that confront our cities can be tackled by gardeners with the right knowledge,” she said.  “The course will run over three, two-hour evening sessions and culminate in a visit to Josh’s personal garden where you will get to see his ideas in practice.”

Over the past five years, Josh has travelled to Africa, the Middle East, India and South East Asia in search of innovative gardening and farming techniques.

Alongside his filming and garden writing, Josh is engaged in teaching and environmental and horticultural consultancy work in the areas of permaculture, water conservation and appropriate technologies for sustainable settlements. He is also working on a PhD at Murdoch University, which examines the role of waste water reuse in sustainable urban landscapes.

The course will run from 7.00pm to 9.00pm on Tuesday, 1, 8 and 15 July and will finish on Saturday, 19 July with the garden visit. Bookings are essential and the $40 course fee must be paid prior to the start of the course.
