Friends in Need of People to Weed in Attadale
Local residents are invited to help the Friends of Attadale Foreshore remove weeds at Attadale Bushland Reserve from Wednesday to Friday, 10 to 12 September.
The enthusiastic friends group has received funding from the Swan Alcoa Landcare Program (SALP) to remove weeds in the bushland along the Burke Drive foreshore. The area is part of a regionally significant bushland/wetland corridor, providing invaluable habitat for local flora and fauna.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said the City of Melville supported the work of the Friends of Attadale Foreshore and had contributed financially with weed control and staff support.
For the past five years, the Friends of Attadale Foreshore has received funding from SALP, which provides funds for community groups and local governments involved in on-ground revegetation and rehabilitation projects. Since 2003, the friends group has planted more than 20,000 seedlings and sedges, planted a native verge along Burke Drive, installed an interpretive shelter and gates, and spent thousands of hours weeding and watering seedlings. Attadale Bushland Reserve is a particularly important reserve as it is near the internationally significant Alfred Cove Marine Park, which becomes home to many migratory birds each year.
Residents who want to take part in one or all of the three days of weeding should meet at the verge opposite 32 Burke Drive, Attadale at 9.30am and bring wet-weather gear, sturdy shoes, a hat, sunscreen, water and lunch. A light barbecue lunch will be provided on Friday, 12 September.
