Published Date: 29 June 2011, 09:50 AM

City of Melville residents and visitors are invited to join in a free celebration of NAIDOC Week (July 3 to 10) on Friday, 8 July 2011.

The celebration will include Aboriginal food, entertainment and a film screening with meet-and-greet opportunities with actors from the movie.

The event will take place at the Willagee Community Centre from 1.00pm to 4.00pm and welcomes the entire community to join in the fun to mark this significant week.

Community Development Officer (Cultural) Marissa Verma said the day would be a great opportunity to join local residents in exploring Aboriginal culture.

“As well as fantastic food and entertainment we’ll also be screening the film Freo Yorgas, plus there will be an art display and Moorditji Yorga doll display,” she said.

“NAIDOC week is the national day to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and recognize contributions by Indigenous Australians across various fields.

“The theme for NAIDOC Week 2011 is Change: The Next Step is Ours, which is a calling to the entire community – so this event is a wonderful way to help change our future and celebrate our history.

“City of Melville is very proud to showcase this event in partnership with many local Aboriginal residents – it’s a partnership set to continue into the future as we pursue the City’s Reconciliation Action Plan in promoting positive working relations with the local Aboriginal community.”

NAIDOC Week is organised by the National Aboriginies and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC).

The event will take place at the Willagee Community Centre, corner of Archibald and Winnacott Streets, Willagee, from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.
