CSS Capabilities Boosted by New Police Role

Published Date: 25 August 2011, 12:00 AM

It has been announced today (Wednesday, 24 August 2011) that the City of Melville Community Safety Service (CSS) will receive greater police support thanks to the creation of a new position, the South Metropolitan District Tactical Supervisor (DTS), at Fremantle Police Station.

The DTS is the representative of the District Superintendent and will be available to CSS Officers for information-sharing and police support.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said, “The DTS will be a valuable resource for the CSS and further enhance our crime prevention activities to deliver a Safer Melville. The City is proud of its positive partnership with Police.”

“For instance, if the CSS observes a suspicious vehicle they will now have the opportunity to contact the DTS with the registration number and be notified straight away if the vehicle is stolen or wanted for any purpose. This means the CSS could continue to monitor and report on the movements of the vehicle and police can dispatch a police vehicle as soon as possible to apprehend the driver."

South Metropolitan Acting-Inspector Craig Sweeney said, “The working relationship between the CSS and Police has proven highly effective with the detection and apprehension of criminals."

“Now, with the appointment of the DTS, the community can feel assured that this two-pronged approach will increase the odds in our favour to lock up the crooks!

“In addition, the existing Safer Melville memorandum of understanding between Police and the City facilitates the exchange of information to reduce criminal activity and anti-social behaviour.

“As part of this partnership, weekly meetings are conducted with respective station officers in charge and the CSS team leaders to identify targets and hot-spots to action.

“The CSS provide a conspicuous, overt presence with their mobile patrols, and a systematic approach to intelligence gathering and reporting.

“The CSS are an integral part of community safety and can provide information to the Police which completes the missing piece of a jigsaw and helps prevent and solve crimes.”
