Community Catches on to Music Program
Community members are invited to ‘catch’ onto a radical new music program supporting youth with disabilities, at an information session at the City of Melville youth space, The Vault, on Tuesday, 7 October at 7:00pm.
Catch Music is a new community organisation supported by the City of Melville launching next week in Perth. The group encourages musicians to get involved with community jam sessions, volunteer music lessons, and concert visits across Perth.
Catch Music chairperson Tim Robertson said over the next six months Catch Music will be setting up jam sessions to link people with disabilities to fellow music lovers in their local area. “We see ourselves as a network of people who love music, he said. “We are trying to build a more inclusive, supportive and friendly community by using the power of music to bring people together, have fun and build meaningful relationships”.
Community Development Officer – Youth, Jo McKay says thousands of people across Perth have difficulty taking part in everyday activities because of a disability of some sort. “As a result, they often spend a lot of time at home, without much to do and are isolated from the rest of the community,” she said. “The program will create opportunities for fun and social interaction which is something that all young people need in there lives.”
The Catch Music information evening will be held at The Vault located at the Melville Civic Centre, Almondbury Road, Booragoon.
