Community Called To Shape Future of Melville

Published Date: 10 November 2011, 12:00 AM

The City of Melville is asking residents to have their say on a key strategic document which identifies community priorities and guides the actions for Melville’s future on major issues such as safety, the environment and sense of community.

The Strategic Community Plan – People, Places, Participation 2007-2017 is reviewed every four years in a series of wide-ranging community engagement processes. Options for the public to engage with the Plan include: a reference group, strategic stakeholder surveys,  neighbourhood workshops and an online forum.

The Plan outlines a shared vision for the future; identifies key themes and areas for action; provides information for planning and service delivery; and budgets for government agencies, local community groups and other stakeholder groups.

City of Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said, “Participants will get the satisfaction of knowing their ideas and priorities have been captured and will be used in strategic planning decisions by the City. Community participation is essential for the success of the Strategic Community Plan and we are looking for a wide and varied group of community members to get involved.”

“This invitation to engage is about close collaboration with our residents to ensure we know what the community requires - it’s a unique opportunity to influence the direction of our beautiful City!”

To help shape the original Strategic Community Plan, in 2005 and 2006, thousands of residents took part in interviews, focus groups, community surveys and website activities.

The new round of reference group meetings will commence on Thursday, 24 November 2011 at 6.30pm in the Swan Room, Civic Centre, 10 Almondbury Road, Booragoon. These meetings will run on a fortnightly basis until May 2012. Participation is voluntary and there are 12 places available. To register for the reference group contact 9364 0660 or email marcia.coelho@melville.wa.gov.au.

People who are unable to participate in the fortnightly meetings are encouraged to take advantage of the other opportunities such as neighbourhood workshops and the internet forum at http://werelisteningmelville.com.au/communityplan
