Community Called to Clean-Up Winthrop

Published Date: 24 November 2011, 12:00 AM

Winthrop residents have been invited to join a Clean-Up Winthrop event on Sunday, 4 December 2011 as part of a community-driven campaign to improve both the appearance of the suburb as well as available services.

The City of Melville’s Rangers, Community Safety and Security Officers (CSS) and West Neighbourhood Officers will pull up their sleeves and join residents for the clean-up morning, which will include a free Neighbourhood Watch barbeque, as well as free activities for kids.

The idea first came from Winthrop resident, John Barrows, who organised a community meeting at Robert Smith Park Winthrop, which was attended by residents and City of Melville Councillor Mark Reynolds, CSS officers and City Community Development Coordinators.

After hearing community requests, the City installed additional park furniture, increased Ranger attendance for dog monitoring and increased awareness of Neighbourhood Watch and CSS services.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said, “Winthrop is a lovely neighbourhood and I encourage residents to demonstrate pride in this wonderful suburb by joining their neighbours, and Council employees, in this fun and productive morning to Clean-Up Winthrop!

“The City takes immense pride in maintaining all of its 18 suburbs so we love to hear from residents if they want us to do things differently. In this case, Mr Barrows contacted us and asked for further assistance – of course, we were happy to help.

“If City of Melville residents have any service requests such as repairing paving, installing park furniture, or planting a verge tree we encourage them to contact us on 1300 635 845 or via the website www.melvillecity.com.au.”

Clean-Up Winthrop will take place at Robert Smith Park on the corner of Silbert Circle and Barrett Lennard Parade in Winthrop at 10.00am on Sunday, 4 December 2011. It will be followed by a free Neighbourhood Watch barbeque and free activities for the kids. No RSVPs are necessary.
