Clever Commuters Invited to Melville Big BikeWeek Breakfast

The City of Melville invites locals to get pedalling, or walking, to its free Big BikeWeek Breakfast on Thursday, 26 March as part of Cycle Instead BikeWeek 2009 celebrations.

TravelSmart Officer Leon Ebbelaar said cyclists, walkers and public transport users were invited to stop in and refuel with a free light breakfast as well as a coffee at Apex Park, near Canning Bridge, Mount Pleasant from 7.00am to 9.30am. “Be active, come and meet people over breakfast and get in early for the chance to score some great giveaways,” he said. “With staff handing out TravelSmart maps, it’s also a great chance to plan how you can walk, ride or catch public transport on a daily basis or just for fun.”

Mayor Russell Aubrey said encouraging sustainable methods of transport was highly important to the City and had a number of benefits for the environment, as well as individual health and wellbeing. “Cycling, walking or taking a train or bus to work can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while saving you money and improving your health,” he said. “We encourage everyone in the community to use an active, sustainable method of transport during BikeWeek and on a day-to-day basis when possible - whether you commute to work or school, or enjoy a recreational ride along the river.”

Cycle Instead BikeWeek, now in its 24th year, will run from Sunday, 22 March to Sunday, 29 March 2009 and will aim to encourage commuters, families and individuals to participate in a range of activities to share the fun and benefits of riding a bicycle.

BikeWeek 2009 and the Melville Big BikeWeek Breakfast are proudly supported by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure and the City of Melville, and aim to promote the use of active transportation in the community.
