Clever Commuters Enjoyed Melville’s Big BikeWeek Breakfast
Young and young-at-heart cycled and walked to the City of Melville’s free Big BikeWeek Breakfast on Thursday, 26 March, as part of Cycle Instead BikeWeek 2009 celebrations.
Cyclists, walkers and public transport users were invited to stop in and refuel with a free light breakfast as well as a coffee at Apex Park, near Canning Bridge, in Mount Pleasant.
TravelSmart Officer Ruth Behn helped to provide the most important meal of the day. She said she was delighted with the turnout, which included both recreational cyclists, and those who rode to work every day. “Not only did the event encourage people to be active but it was also a lively social gathering, with a constant flow of people arriving,” she said.
“Encouraging sustainable methods of transport is highly important to the City and has a number of benefits for the environment, as well as individual health and wellbeing. I think most cyclists agreed riding to work on a regular basis gave them a healthy kick-start to their day,” she said.
Cycle Instead BikeWeek, now in its 24th year, aims to encourage commuters, families and individuals to participate in a range of activities to share the fun and benefits of riding a bicycle.
BikeWeek 2009 and the Melville Big BikeWeek Breakfast are proudly supported by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure and the City of Melville, and aim to promote the use of active transportation in the community.
