The City of Melville’s Community Safety and Security Service (CSS) was awarded the Office of Crime Prevention’s quarterly Eyes on the Street Award yesterday (Thursday, 25 September) at the Melville Operations Centre.

The award recognises the CSS’s teams exceptional efforts in taking part in the Eyes on the Street program which is an intelligence gathering program that encourages and enables state government agencies, local governments and businesses to identify, record and report possible criminal activity and suspicious behaviour to police.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the award acknowledged the CSS’s vigilance against crime in the City of Melville. “The City is serious about crime,” he said.” With summer and the school holidays approaching there is often an increase in crime. We need to work together as a community to eradicate these problems.”

The CSS are an active member of the Eyes on the Street program by providing proactive mobile patrols and response services aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour, crime and fear of crime throughout the community.

The CSS team is trained in the methodology and reporting mechanisms of the Eyes on the Street program. The officers observe, monitor and report incidents of anti-social behaviour and other issues involving safety and security within the community to the police on a daily basis.

Neighbourhood Amenity Manager Brodie Dawkins said the CSS met with the Murdoch, Palmyra and Cockburn Police each week to exchange crime intelligence and information.  “The information we receive contains details outlining trouble areas that we can target with our hotspot patrols,” he said. “The information exchange with Eyes on the Street assists police with their investigations and can lead to the successful prosecutions of offenders.”
