City’s New Trucks Won’t go to Waste

Published Date: 28 July 2010, 12:00 AM

The City of Melville waste management fleet now has an even greater presence on the streets after introducing the City’s new branding with an eye catching design across all of its new vehicles, which hit the roads in late July.

The new look was incorporated onto the five new waste trucks, purchased as part of the City’s long-term fleet replacement program, which aims to ensure the quality of both the City’s assets and the provision of its waste service.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Marten Tieleman said the City’s Waste Services department provided a vital service to the community and it was important that the City’s vehicles were well maintained and presented a strong visual identity in the community.

“Within waste services, the City has 35 staff, 28 drivers and 23 trucks – all providing waste and recycling collections to approximately 38,500 households.” he said.

“Each of the City’s waste management trucks average 1,300 bin collections per day.  In a year, the waste management fleet make a staggering 3.34 million refuse collections, which includes refuse and recycling collections from both residential and commercial properties, green waste and white good verge collections and refuse collections from river foreshore bins, street litter bins and parks and reserves. Around 58,500 tonnes of waste are collected each year.

“The City’s wastes services also repair, replace and deliver around 5,000 bins annually.

“I encourage residents to look out for our friendly waste management staff in their new trucks.”

do the waste colection trucks have certain working hours or can they start at any time? We find the noise at 5.50am
rather disturbing

I'm really glad that CoM has spent (wasted?) money making it's new waste management trucks look pretty - at least we'll know who to call when they leave our bins and/or rubbish all over the street, and when they make so much racket whilst most people are still asleep. If residents & tradesmen are not permitted to start noisy machinery such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, etc. before 7.00am, why does the CoM allow it's Waste Services team to start its weekly collections before this time, especially when the trucks are noisier because of their automatic transmission and start/stop activity?

We do understand your feelings, and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

The City of Melville Waste Trucks undertake over 3 million bin collections each year - to do this there are designated routes and an early starting time of 6.00am to help ensure a minimum disruption to morning and afternoon traffic, and to avoid congestion on busy roads.

Waste trucks only remain in any one location for up to a minute, within the road reserve, and as they are constantly moving on, they are permitted to commence at the earlier time of 6.00am, unlike those more stagnant activities mentioned which are not permitted to start at this time.

Given the number of residents within the city, based upon the current fleet and manning sizes, the early start is necessary.

The collections routes are periodically reviewed to ensure they provide the greatest productivity and best use of resources. In that process, we do recognise this means some residents are subject to the noise of an early collection truck once a week.

While no system can be perfect, City of Melville residents enjoy one of the best waste collection services around, with over 98 per cent of all residents detailing that they are happy with the current collection services.

If you have experienced any problems with your service, we would like to hear from you. Please contact us on 1300 635 845.
