City’s Libraries Will Offer Virtual Safety Tips to Residents

Published Date: 23 May 2011, 12:00 AM

National Cyber Security Awareness Week (NCSAW) (30 May to 3 June 2011) will raise important safety issues when it is promoted in the City of Melville’s five libraries.

During the week, the City will be erecting information displays in all five local libraries to raise awareness of cyber safety issues, including protecting your private information.

In the City of Melville, 67.8 per cent of households have an internet connection.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said, “NCSAW is a Federal Government initiative, held annually to help Australians understand cyber security risks as well as educate home and small business users on the simple steps they can take to protect their personal and financial information online.

“The internet has increasingly become part of our daily life and it provides a way for us to connect and communicate with the outside world from within our own home. It can be educational and entertaining and can simplify the daily organisation of our lives.

“However, these benefits come with risks and challenges and it’s important that you and your family are protected. Securing your computer, being aware of the hazards and practising safe online behaviour are ways you can minimise your exposure to online risks.”

The NCSAW promotes eight simple tips for better online security:

1.      Install and renew your security software and set it to scan regularly

2.      Turn on automatic updates on all your software, including your operating system and other applications

3.      Think carefully before you click on links and attachments, particularly in emails and on social networking sites

4.      Regularly adjust your privacy settings on social networking sites

5.      Report or talk to someone about anything online that makes you uncomfortable or threatened – download the Government's  Cybersafety Help Button

6.      Stop and think before you post any photos or financial or personal information about yourself, your friends or family

7.      Use strong passwords and change them at least twice a year and

8.      Talk with your family about good online safety.
