City Treats Seniors to Movie for Multicultural Week

Published Date: 19 September 2007, 12:00 PM

Seniors will be treated to a free movie, presented by the City of Melville, as part of the Seniors Week and Multicultural Week celebrations.

Both Seniors Week and Multicultural Week take place during October. The City of Melville is using the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the lives of 25 per cent of City of Melville seniors who were born overseas.

The critically acclaimed film Ushpizin, meaning holy guests, will be screened at Bull Creek Community Centre on Monday, 8 October, and Willagee Community Centre on Tuesday, 9 October, both at 10.30am.

Mayor Katherine Jackson, who will open both sessions, said it was important to celebrate and embrace the diverse cultural backgrounds in the community as well as its senior citizens. “Our seniors make up an integral part of the community and a large number of these immigrated to Australia and have since contributed to our City’s development,” she said. “Senior Week and Multicultural Week give us an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the cultural diversity of our seniors.”

Ushpizin, spoken in Hebrew with English subtitles, is an authentic, unique and humorous look at ways in which faith is tested and yet how everyone can benefit from the generosity it can offer.

Described as “one of the best character-based comedies of the year” (LA Daily News), Ushpizin has won a best picture and best actor award.

Guests to Ushpizin will be treated to ice-creams and snacks to enjoy while watching the movie.
