City Supports Reading Challenge this Summer

Published Date: 08 December 2009, 12:00 AM

Parents in the City of Melville can help their child develop a love of reading by encouraging them to enter the Premier’s Summer Reading Challenge, supported by the City’s five libraries. The challenge kicked off on 7 December 2009 and will run until 8 February 2010.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the previous challenge event was a great success in the City of Melville, with many parents and children taking on the task to read for 15 hours over the summer period. “We challenge you to do the same this time around. For every five hours children read, they can collect a sticker and a prize from their Melville library and be in the running to win hundreds of prizes on offer, including a family trip to Broome valued at up to $6,000 from QBE Insurance,” he said.

Parents can also enter this year by either reading for 15 hours or reading to their child for 10 or 15 hours. They can then be in the running to win one of two Coles Myer vouchers and a book package from Fremantle Press valued at up to $500.

Special Services Librarian Dominique Ward said participating in the Reading Challenge was a great way to keep your kids interested in reading and learning over the summer – and they were rewarded for doing so. “It helps children return to school in the New Year, ready to learn,” she said.

“One of WA’s top storytellers, Glenn Swift, will also be visiting Melville libraries during January as part of the challenge to tell some tall tales of brave knights and fair maidens. Additionally, prize-winning Western Australian author Mark Greenwood will present a session on some amazing true tales he has written. Interested people should contact their local library for more details,” she said.
