City Seeks Community’s Views on Public Toilet

Published Date: 20 July 2009, 12:00 AM

The City of Melville encourages interested people to fill out a survey form to determine the level of support for a proposed public toilet within the Applecross village, on Ardross Street. The survey period closes on Friday, 31 July 2009.

Chief Executive Officer Dr Shayne Silcox said the City of Melville had undertaken this survey following a petition being presented to Council requesting that a public toilet be installed in the village. “Shoppers to the precinct do not necessarily live locally and it is simply a matter of convenience to provide them with a public toilet. However, the City has made no commitment as yet in relation to this matter and the Council will wait to consider the survey results. The cost of a toilet will be in excess of $100,000 and we do not want to waste ratepayers’ money if the unit is deemed unnecessary. Security issues will also be fully considered, as the safety of residents and visitors to the City is paramount,” he said.

Special Projects Officer Roy Bailey said the City of Melville was seeking comment on the proposed self-cleaning public toilet from business owners, shoppers and other stakeholders. “A display board advertising the proposal has now been erected at two separate locations in the village. Residents and users of the precinct are invited to take part in the survey by obtaining a form from local businesses as indicated on the display board. Following the survey, a report of the findings will be presented to Council for its consideration,” he said.

Anyone who would like to know more about the proposal is invited to view the noticeboard or contact Special Projects Officer Roy Bailey on 9364 0674.

Public Toilet - Applecross Village

I agree that a self-cleaning public toilet would be the way to go, perhaps (as in Europe) a charge to use it (50c or $1). I live in Booragoon, but I know that when visiting the Village, there is nowhere to "go".

I completely support the proposal to provide a public toilet to service the Applecross Village. Having been " caught short" recently where the only facility was some distance away some facility well designed and maintained will not devalue the area. The only alternative is for access to be provided by the businesses in the area which is not readily agreed to by the establishments.

please see the self closing/ cleaning in Subiaco at the bottom of the Art Centre in the park.
FREE and I use it often.
thanks. it is needed there in Applecross village

and also ONE with a SHOWER at the bottom of KENT ST in BICTON on the beach, near the Jetty at the end of the walkway from Point Walter . We are supposed to do "it" in the water or "behind a tree" (which is difficult for ladies!)
tnaks for considering this new issue.

Public Toilet Ardross Street shops

I think a public toilet is a necessity in this area. I do live locally but like most women, as we get older continence is an issue. Any amenity that makes people stay in the area has to be good for business. I think it would also be welcomed by mothers with young families. Where coffee is sold, toilets have to be available. If each ratepayer was levied $1 the price would be covered immediately. I also have no problems with a a charge for the privilege of using a clean toilet, this seems to be standard paractice all over the world.

Yes toilets in the Applecross Village have always been much needed but do they have to be right there in such a prime and obvious location - can't they be behind the shops!!! If they have to go where the dry cleaner is the entrance would have to be off McLeod Road and the Ardross street side would need to look completely unlike a toilet block otherwise it would stand out like a sore thumb in such a location.

I think you need to post a questionnaire to all Applecross residents and ask them to return by post their comments. I think residents generally don't want this and $100,000 is a lot to spend.

I believe the unit is necessary and a self cleaning unit is a most appropriate model. As someone else noted, if there are conveniences in the area, people will stay longer with obvious benefits to local business. Maybe then those local businesses could subsidise the cost in part?

I agree with needing a toilet in the area. Families and seniors would spend more time vising the local businesses if they didn't have to ruch off to find a toilet, especially after a coffee or fresh juice in summer. There are some great little shops in the area, and I think that they should be approached for their input as this can directly affect them. I'd be interested to learn more about the plans for that area and how a toilet fits in long-term. $100k isn't a lot in the scheme of things.
