City of Melville Staff Win LGMA Finance Award

Published Date: 06 March 2009, 03:54 PM

City of Melville staff Debbie Whyte and Khris Yeoh were recognised for excellence in finance at the Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA) Finance Professionals Conference held on Friday, 27 February 2009.

Senior Management Accountant Debbie Whyte and Financial Accountant Khris Yeoh were recognised for their accomplishments when they each received the LGMA Finance Achievement Award.

The award is presented annually to local government staff who have demonstrated excellence in the finance area and outstanding service to local government and the community.

A maximum of five recipients each year receive the award from the talent pool of finance staff in Western Australia’s 139 councils. This year, only three awards were presented – two of which were received by City of Melville staff.

Chief Executive Officer Dr Shayne Silcox commended Ms Whyte and Mr Yeoh on their achievements. “It’s fantastic to see Debbie and Khris receive formal recognition for the extraordinary efforts they have put into their positions,” he said. “We are proud to celebrate their successes and their commitment to excellence.”

Ms Whyte, who was recognised for her efforts in implementing the Budget Module of Finance 1, said that she was excited to have won the industry award. “Receiving this award was quite unexpected for Khris and I, however, it was nice to have our efforts recognised.”

These sentiments were shared by Mr Yeoh, who said that receiving the LGMA award was a great honour. “Receiving formal recognition like this is really motivating,” he said. “It has validated our efforts and inspired me to grow even more in the finance area.”

Ms Whyte and Mr Yeoh were both praised for the successful introduction of the new accounting package as well as their proactive approach in clearly communicating financial information.

Congratulations to the two Melville staffers for their awards, richly deserved I am sure. I would like to see a "special" award (a annual cash bonus maybe?) given to the person or persons at the council who managed to produce an extraordinary financial result of negative 21 Million plus on investments of ratepayers funds, which no doubt will be responsible for allowing rates to decrease in future years. Well done City of Melville
