City of Melville Staff Keen on Being Green

City of Melville staff got down to earth on Friday, 5 June 2009 by taking part in a tree planting event, in support of World Environment Day.

The planting activity took place near the Davy Street entry to the City’s Civic Centre. It was an initiative of the City’s internal Green Team, which promotes environmentally-friendly ideas and activities to staff.

Sustainability Officer and Green Team Coordinator Sarah Muirhead said the aim of the event was to encourage staff to think globally and act locally. “This activity enabled staff to work together in taking sustainable steps during their lunch break. It also helped rejuvenate the City’s entry statement and improve the amenity of the wider area,” she said. “Other initiatives of the Green Team, set up in 2008, have included ensuring individual staff members are equipped with dual-purpose bins, with storage space for recyclable materials underneath.”

Mayor Russell Aubrey, who was among those to attend and plant a tree, said it was the City’s role to show leadership in being environmentally-minded and set a good example for the community. “The City also has a broader commitment to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This includes running the Piney Lakes Environmental Education Centre, which is an innovative centre showcasing the latest in renewable energy technologies and sustainable building design. The building offers a unique opportunity to learn more about the environment and sustainable living,” he said.
