City of Melville Proud Host of Launch for Youth

Published Date: 17 February 2009, 12:00 AM

The City of Melville hosted the launch of the ‘Make It Happen’ online guide to event-planning for young people today (Tuesday, 17 February).

The resource was officially launched by the Minister for Youth Donna Faragher at the City’s youth space, The Vault, while Mayor Russell Aubrey was also in attendance.

Coordinated by the Office for Youth, the launch included young people who had been involved in organising their own events sharing their experiences and stories.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said The Vault – which offers a variety of activities and equipment including computers and pool tables – was the ideal venue for what had been a fantastic youth event. “Listening to the young guest speakers’ experiences was interesting and more importantly displayed the talented and proactive nature of many young people. With their awareness of and adaptability to new technology, they are in a sense leading the way in today’s fast-paced society,” he said.

“The City of Melville, being as youth-oriented as it is, was proud to host the launch. The events and activities we offer for the young people in our community include the YAC It Up Alternative Illuminate Youth Art Exhibition, to be launched in April, Youth Cultural and Youth Sport Grants, the Youth Sports Scholarship Scheme, urban art projects, and much more,” he said.

“The City also facilitates the Melville Youth Advisory Council (YAC), which is a group of local young people who come together on the first Monday of each month to discuss youth issues, plan youth events and voice youth concerns to local and State government. Members are aged between 14 and 23, with nominations open each August/September,” he said.

The Vault is open on Thursdays from 5pm to 8.30pm for drop-in suitable for those aged 12 to 18.
