City Invites Smart Commuters for Breakfast

Published Date: 29 February 2008, 10:44 AM

The City of Melville is hosting a free SMARTi Breakfast on Thursday, 13 March as part of the Cycle Instead Bikeweek 2008 celebrations.

Cyclists, walkers and public transport users will be treated to a healthy breakfast of fruit, juice and a freshly baked bun or muffin at Apex Reserve, near Canning Bridge, Mount Pleasant from 7.00am to 8.30am.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said it was extremely important for the City to encourage sustainable methods of transport. “Cycling and walking are a great way to burn calories and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while catching public transport can be good for the hip pocket as well,” he said. “We encourage everyone to consider an active and sustainable method of transport on Wednesday, 13 March and join us for a healthy breakfast during Bikeweek.”

Cycle Instead Bikeweek, now into its 23rd year, will run from Friday, 7 March to Sunday, 16 March. The 10 days will include more than 100 different activities which demonstrate the fun aspects and health benefits of cycling.

Melville’s SMARTi Project Officer Ruth Behn said the SMARTi Breakfast would be a great morning. “There will be plenty of food and refreshments as well as bike maintenance checks performed by George’s Bike Shop and security engraving available,” she said. “Get in early for your chance to win some great giveaways.”

Organised by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure, the City of Melville and the Bicycle Transport Alliance, the SMARTi Breakfast is a perfect pitstop for people on their way to work.
