Six primary school students from around the City of Melville each received more than $200 worth of books for themselves and their school libraries, on Friday, 14 September, for winning the City’s Library Services Children’s Book Week competition.

More than 4000 children and 700 adults took part in the City of Melville Children’s Book Week program which ran from Monday, 13 August to Friday, 24 August 2007.

Children’s Book Week is celebrated each year during August to promote children’s literature through guest authors, illustrators, storytellers, after school activities and competitions.

Mayor Katherine Jackson said Children’s Book Week was a great way to encourage children to enjoy books and become passionate about reading. “The City of Melville had some great illustrators, storytellers and authors come in to entertain and inspire their audiences,” she said. “Personalities such as interstate author Krista Bell, Western Australian author and Olympian Sally Carbon and storytellers Glen Swift, Grant Cottrell and Robin Bett all took part in the City of Melville’s Children’s Book Week.”

The City of Melville Children’s Book Week competition was for primary school students aged five to 12. The competition required students to complete a word search of Children’s Book Week short-listed award titles.

The $1200 worth of books, generously donated by Dymocks Garden City, went to the six winning students and their schools’ libraries.

The competition winners and associated school and age are:

·         Katelyn McCullough – Melville Primary School (7)

·         Atreus Wilkes – Carlee Community School (8)

·         Joseph Chin – Mount Pleasant Primary (7)

·         Eloise Wright – Oberthur Primary School (9)

·         Elliott Schwab – Applecross Primary School (9)

·         Sasha Cant – Mel Maria Catholic Primary School (11)

Strategic Community Development Director Anne McAllister, who presented the competition winners with their prizes, said the City of Melville Children’s Book Week activities received a high level of interest from within the community. “There was a great response to Children’s Book Week this year with schools, pre-primaries, kindies and day care centres all taking part in the program,” she said.
