Twenty-three local community groups received grants at the City of Melville Major Cultural and Community Grants Presentation Evening on Monday, 8 September at the Melville Civic Centre.
The City of Melville offers a number of Cultural and Community Development Grants, which aim to encourage and develop local community projects and support community groups that make a positive contribution to community and cultural life in the City of Melville.
Mayor Russell Aubrey, who presented the awards, said the groups who received grants would provide a means for the community to access a broad range of services, programs and activities. “This year, we awarded grants to a range of organisations across our City and across many demographic groupings,” he said. “The grants allow these community groups to provide an amazing contribution to the community through events, education, community building, culture, and strengthening community group capacity.”
Five of the main Major Cultural and Community Grants recipients for 2008-2009 and the associated projects were:
1. All Saints’ College – Lit Fest 09: A festival for young adult and children’s literature
2. Bengali Association of WA – Annual Cultural Concert
3. Constable Care Child Safety Foundation Inc – Life Skills Intervention Program
4. City of Melville Citizens Relief Fund – City of Melville emergency relief support
5. Rotary Club of Applecross – Jacaranda Festival.
Rotary Club of Applecross Member John Hoskin said the grant enabled the Rotary Club to proceed with the organisation and running of the annual Jacaranda festival. “The Jacaranda Festival is an event for the local residents, allowing them to get to know local services within the community,” he said. “We are extremely grateful to the City of Melville for their encouragement and support of the festival as we spend a lot of time organising it each year.”
