On Australia Day (Thursday, 26 January 2012), the City of Melville Chief Executive Officer Dr Shayne Silcox was awarded the Public Service Medal by the Australian Government for outstanding public service, particularly to local government in Western Australia.

The award recognises Dr Silcox’s service to the City of Melville, as well as the Local Government industry as a whole in building strong, cohesive and well-serviced communities.

Mayor Russell Aubrey congratulated Dr Silcox on the award.

“I congratulate Dr Silcox’s national recognition, which reflects the City’s commitment to the community,” he said.

“Dr Silcox’s commitment is evident through his active involvement with Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA), where he was recently appointed State President of LGMA (WA).

“In his role at the LGMA, Dr Silcox has represented his peers and the local government sector in dealings with Government Ministers and on key working groups that shape the future direction of the structure and operations of local governments in Western Australia.

“In addition, Dr Silcox is also an active and important member of the Western Australian Local Government Association's Finance and Services Committee.”

Of particular note, Dr Silcox contributed greatly to the Association's Systemic Sustainability Study, bringing his experience in local government and his knowledge to a working group which aimed to improve and reform service delivery options for local governments. He is also currently a member of the President’s Advisory Group, advising WALGA on the local government reform.

These reports produced by the working group are still having a significant impact in shaping the future of local government in Western Australia.

The Public Service Medal acknowledges outstanding service by employees of the Australian Government and state, territory and local government employees. Nominations for the award are formally sought twice a year, and are generally made by departments or agencies, but any member of the public may put forward a nomination.

The nominations are considered by the Public Service Medal Committee. The nomination is put forth by the responsible Minister to the Governor-General for approval.
