City Celebrates People with a Disability

Published Date: 03 December 2010, 12:00 AM

The City of Melville is celebrating International Day of People with a Disability (IDPwD) today (Friday, 3 December 2010) by offering residents with a disability free entry to the gym and pools at Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre, as well as screening a free family outdoor film for all members of the community tomorrow (Saturday, 4 December 2010).

Mayor Russell Aubrey said the important day was aimed at celebrating diversity and recognising the valuable contribution that people with a disability make in the community.

“The City is proud to support IDPwD because it builds community spirit and showcases the skills, abilities, contributions and achievements of people with a disability,” he said.

“The day is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote an understanding of people with a disability and encourages support for their dignity, rights and well-being.

“Importantly, the day also seeks to increase awareness of the benefits of integration of people with a disability in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

“By making the Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre free today for people with a disability we reinforce the message that being active is important for both body and mind.

“The screening of the film, PONYO, encourages residents from all walks of life to come together and celebrate diversity and the achievements of people with a disability.”

Today from midday to closing time the Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre, Marmion Street, Booragoon is offering free entry to the gym and pools to those members of the community with a disability.

On Saturday, 4 December a free, family outdoor film, PONYO (rated G) will be screened at Bill Ellison Reserve, Mandala Crescent, Bateman. PONYO is an animated adventure centred on a five-year-old boy and his relationship with a goldfish princess who longs to become human. Prior to the feature, a series of short films about people with disabilities will be screened by Disability in the Arts Disadvantage in the Arts Australia. Entry is from 6pm, with the film screenings at sundown. Residents are encouraged to pack a picnic - light refreshments will also be available to purchase.

Well done!

Just to say thanks for the efforts you are making for the disabled. This is so valuable to our community. I've recently become aware of the impact disability has on the poorest of the poor in developing countries around the world (through a new job in the NGO sector), so it is personally very encouraging to see our city modelling best practice. If there is any interest on the part of the City of Melville or the Aquatic Centre in exploring a partnership with a disadvantaged community overseas seeking to similarly include the disabled, I would be happy to be a catalyst in this regard through my contacts in the sector. Just wanted to say well done!
Merry Christmas and thanks again for your great work,
