City Celebrates NAIDOC Week on the Big Screen
Melville residents will have an opportunity to see Australia through Aboriginal eyes at a NAIDOC Week screening of the Aboriginal Film Liyar Ngarn.
The film, which is supported by the City of Melville in conjunction with the Walyalup Reconciliation Group, will be screened on Friday, 4 July, from 7.30pm to 9.00pm, at the City of Melville Civic Centre.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said the Liyarn Ngarn screening was part of the City of Melville’s support of NAIDOC week. “NAIDOC week is a celebration of the survival of Indigenous culture and contribution to modern society,” he said. “The City of Melville is proud to support the NAIDOC Week celebrations in recognition of Indigenous art and culture as it provides the community with an opportunity to learn more about Australia’s Indigenous cultural heratige.”
Liyarn Ngarn in the Yawaru language of the Broome/West Kimberley Region means, "Coming Together of the Spirit". The film relvolves around renowned English actor Pete Postlethwaite who joins songman Archie Roach in an enduring Australian journey that connects with the 30-year journey of Indigenous leader and Yawaru man, Pat Dodson in his quest for true reconciliation between the original owners of the land and the immigrants.
Producer of films, Wolf Creek and Rogue, David Lightfoot said the film was a must see for all Australians. “Liyarn Ngarn had me riveted and moved me to tears, anger and shame. It’s the most culturally significant film I’ve seen in years,” he said.
Liyarn Ngarn will be shown at the Melville Civic Centre, Conference Room, 10 Almondbury Road, Booragoon.
