City Celebrates Harmony Week with Family Films
City of Melville residents are encouraged to share a night under the stars to celebrate Harmony Week (15 – 21 March 2010) with two family films to be shown in Applecross and Kardinya.
Bride and Prejudice will be shown on Wednesday, 17 March at Jeff Joseph Reserve on The Strand in Applecross. Up will be shown on Thursday, 18 March at the local park on Slater Court, Kardinya.
The invitation comes from Mayor Russell Aubrey, who said attending the films gave people the opportunity to pay tribute to Harmony Week’s message of inclusivity.
“By enjoying these films, residents will demonstrate their support for cultural diversity,” he said.
“Harmony Week’s continuing message of ‘Everyone Belongs’ – refers to community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. The 2010 theme is ‘Express Yourself’. This gives people the opportunity to share with others the importance of diversity in your workplace, school and community through action, performance, fashion and food.”
“The first Harmony Week film is Bride and Prejudice (PG rated) which explores the romance between an Indian family’s daughter and an English man. The film is based on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and has a distinctly Bollywood flavour with lots of singing and dancing.”
“The second film, Up (PG rated), has just won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The film centres around an elderly widower and a young, over-eager wilderness explorer, who fly to South America in a floating house suspended from helium balloons.”
Prior to both films, there will be colourful, multicultural performances of Chinese dance, tai chi and belly dancing. There will also be mask-making for children.
“WA has the largest proportion of overseas born people in Australia or 27 per cent of the total population. Similarly, the City of Melville has a wide variety of cultures,” Mayor Aubrey said.
“Our schools, workplaces, restaurants and sports clubs are highly multicultural and all City of Melville residents benefit from this rich cross-section. Our residents live and socialise together in a very positive manner.”
The Mayor said the City of Melville was also proud to employ a culturally-diverse workforce. City of Melville employees intend to celebrate Harmony Week by sharing international cuisine with one another.
