Christmas ‘Wishing Trees’ Donate to Worthy Cause

Published Date: 29 November 2010, 12:00 AM

City of Melville residents have today (Monday, 29 November) been invited to embrace the spirit of giving by donating a Christmas gift at their nearest City of Melville recreation centre to Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC).

It's hoped the charity drive, titled '24 Days of Giving,' will inspire local residents to donate specially-requested household items such as: coffee beans, cutlery and crockery; gifts for children up to age 16; and vouchers for movies, toy stores and sporting events to make the lives of families staying at Ronald McDonald House a little easier.

A Christmas 'Wishing Tree' is on display at both the Melville Recreation Centre and the Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre, with the RMHC wish list alongside and all donated gifts will be distributed to the worthwhile charity.

City of Melville Lifestyle Services Team Leader Julian Pace said RMHC had been chosen because the organisation helped a diverse group of Australian families, facing extreme challenges.

"This vital charity is an independent, non-profit organisation that supports seriously ill children and their families while the children are undergoing treatment for serious illness at Princess Margaret Hospital," he said.

"Christmas is a time when families and children should be happy and enjoying themselves, unfortunately Ronald McDonald House will be caring for 18 families who are unable to return home over the Christmas period.

"I encourage residents of the City of Melville to pay a visit to the recreation centres in either Booragoon or Melville and donate a gift to the Christmas Wishing Trees.

"You will be rewarded with the knowledge you have helped a seriously ill child and their family. You will also receive a decorative paper bauble as a token of your gift, which you can hang on your own Christmas tree."

The Christmas Wishing Trees will be accepting gifts at the Melville Recreation Centre, Stock Road, Melville and the Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre, Marmion Street, Booragoon from Wednesday, 1 December to Friday 24, December.

RMHC's programs include: Ronald McDonald Houses; Learning Programs; Family Rooms; Cord Blood Bank; Family Retreats; and Grants.
