Ceramics Exhibition Raises the Profile of Clay
The City of Melville invites residents and visitors alike to the Ceramic Arts Association of WA (CAAWA) 2011 Annual Selective Exhibition to be shown at Heathcote Museum and Gallery in Applecross from Saturday, 9 July to Sunday, 14 August 2011.
The exhibition will showcase a range of clay-inspired works created by CAAWA members. CAAWA is a not-for-profit organisation run by members aiming to promote all aspects of handmade pottery and ceramic sculpture to anyone with an interest in the subject.
City of Melville Curator Soula Veyradier said, “This stunning exhibition aims to raise the profile of clay – culturally, educationally, politically and socially.”
“City of Melville residents and the general public will have the opportunity to appreciate a diverse range of techniques showcasing the art of ceramics.”
CAAWA President Cher Shackleton said the exhibition collection is broad.
“There will be a range of works from internationally-renowned artists to those with less experience,” she said. “Most of the works will be in clay with the occasional item in glass or metal.”
“A guest selector has been invited not only to select and open the show but to award prizes. The Kusnik Award, an award of excellence, is named in honour of our esteemed colleague Mike Kusnik and is the major award.”
A Judge’s Award and three Honourable Mentions are also given. The person who selected the exhibition works is Artist, Collector and Curator Diane McCusker.
Residents are invited to the opening night on Friday, 8 July 2011 at 6.00pm. RSVP by Monday, 4 July 2011 to Kaylene Poon on 9364 0158 or Kaylene.poon@melville.wa.gov.au.
