Building Demolition Makes Way for the Future

Published Date: 01 December 2011, 12:00 AM

As part of an ongoing drive to reduce costs to ratepayers and after a series of stakeholder meetings, seven unused and obsolete City of Melville buildings will be demolished from December 2011 to make way for a variety of future uses.

The buildings have been approved for demolition for a number of reasons which include: poor condition; asbestos removal; servicing the needs of adjacent users; the purpose of the building restricting wider community use; and to deter anti-social behaviour.

Chief Executive Officer Dr Shayne Silcox said, “Managing assets responsibly is an important part of the City’s role. With extensive community consultation, these buildings have been assessed as no longer useful so they should be demolished to make way for tangible community benefit.”

“The remaining vacant land will eventually be sold to assist with the development of other community facilities to help prevent future rates rises.”

The buildings set for demolition from December are the former:

·         Carrawatha school buildings

·         Mt Pleasant Pre-Primary School

·         Former Scout Storage in Waddell Road

·         ‘Rener Health’ Building at the corner of Stock Road

·         Canning Highway Ardross Child Health Centre

·         Applecross Pre-Primary School and the

·         St Michael’s Terrace Child Health Centre in Mount Pleasant.
