Ben Steps Up To Raise Funds for MS

An inspiring City of Melville employee is raising funds for multiple sclerosis (MS) by competing in the 2011 ENERFLEX STEP UP for MS (Sunday, 29 May 2011) in honour of his late mother who battled the condition.

City of Melville Environmental Officer and Palmyra resident Ben Kelly said he was competing in the race up the 1,096 steps of Central Park Tower in Perth, to raise money for the people and families affected by the heart breaking condition.

“This is a very worthy cause and I invite residents of the City of Melville to register to run the race or donate to the cause,” he said.

“I am stoked to be sitting second on the individual fundraising leader board! I’m hoping more people from the City of Melville area will get behind me for this very worthwhile cause.”

Mr Kelly said preparing for the fitness event is just as important as taking part.

“The most important aims in exercise preparation are to provide your body with enough fuel and water to complete the task and remain injury free,” he said.

“I am training on Jacob’s Ladder in Kings Park and hope to raise $5,000 in honour of my late mother who suffered the debilitating symptoms of MS.”

“I know from personal experience how difficult it is for a person suffering from MS and the journey their loved ones must take with them. My motivation is for those people going through what we did and to raise funds for important care, support and research.

“I think too often we take for granted our freedom and fortune to be able to do something like walking up a flight of stairs. As well as raising funds, I want to bring awareness of how lucky we are when we have our health and the health of our loved ones.”

ENERFLEX STEP UP for MS is a unique vertical challenge open to people of all walks of life which will take place on Sunday 29th May 2011 at Perth’s tallest building, Central Park.

Last year, the event raised $110,000 for people living with multiple sclerosis (MS), all thanks to the combined efforts of those who participated and their sponsors. This year the society is hoping to exceed this amount.

The MS Society of WA is an independent, state-based organisation supporting people with multiple sclerosis (MS), their families and carers through the supply of professional health care services.
