Beach Scene Shines at City’s Annual Art Awards
The City of Melville recently announced Suzanne Logue as the People’s Choice Winner in its prestigious 2009 Art Awards.
The Peoples’ Choice category is an annual inclusion in the Art Awards, giving artists who have broad public appeal a chance to shine. Ms Logue was also highly commended in the Acrylic category for the same work – titled ‘Coastal Walk’. She has received a prize of $1,000 for winning the People’s Choice category.
Community Development Officer – Arts, Hannah Katarski said Suzanne stood out as a clear winner in this category. “Suzanne’s work often depicts stunning beach scenes, capturing light and mood beautifully. I think her work has been so popular with the public because so many people have a strong connection to the ocean and its beauty,” she said.
Ms Logue lives in Two Rocks and gains much inspiration from her local beach. Originally from Perth, her background includes studying at Nepean College (now the University of Western Sydney), and practising art in the United States, where her talent was acknowledged with several awards. “I worked in different media in the States over about 15 years, exhibiting widely. My art was diverse and included abstract Australian landscapes,” she said.
Locally, Ms Logue has previously been recognised as the People’s Choice Winner at the Perth Royal Show and the Atwell Gallery in Applecross. She has also set up Downstairs Gallery in Two Rocks for grassroots painters, to “give something back”. She said that the beach featured in her current work was two minutes walk from her house. “It has amazing, high dunes and spectacular light creating patterns. I have always been interested in light and try to capture both the crisp morning, and the gentle pink afternoon light,” she said.
Ms Logue said she was excited and honoured to win the City of Melville award. “I am enjoying being the people’s painter. I think people like to have something they can recognise. When I have fully exhausted this subject, I will move on to something else. However, I am challenged by this work at the moment and find it enjoyable,” she said.
