Be a Novel Lover on Library Lovers’ Day
The first Library Lovers’ Day to be held in the City of Melville will give locals the chance to express love for their library leading up to Valentine’s Day.
The City’s libraries will celebrate the community’s love affair with books throughout February, with the official day being Saturday, 14 February. The celebration will include several quirky activities being held throughout the month and even a competition to get hearts and minds racing.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said this was a great initiative to encourage people to make the most of their local library. “Our libraries are enormously valuable resources for the community,” he said. “This is a great way to celebrate the community’s love of not only books, but of the diverse range of services that are available.”
At all five City of Melville libraries, locals can dash in and pick up a ‘Dinner and Movie’ pack, which includes a themed cookbook and DVD to show their library and their loved one they care. This could include the movie Titanic and a cookbook containing recipes from the historic voyage. There is also a chance to have a blind date with a book or to try an author from one of the library’s ‘Most Loved Books’ lists.
Library devotees can also enter a competition to win a Library Lovers’ hamper by stating why they love their library in 25 words or less. The love will come back to every participant, who will get a chocolate in return for their entry.
Library Services Coordinator Clare Coney said Melville locals borrow almost a million items every year, including books, magazines, CDs, DVDs and more. “This is a fun way of celebrating the great relationship between members of the community and their library,” she said. “I encourage our library lovers to come in and visit us and get involved in these special celebrations.”
Library Lovers’ Day started as a State Government initiative that went national in 2007 after a hugely successful event in New South Wales the year before. This is the first time the City of Melville libraries have participated in what is anticipated to be a fun and enjoyable day for all.
