Artistic Talent Acknowledged in City’s Annual Art Awards
The winners of the City of Melville’s prestigious 2009 Art Awards were announced on Friday, 29 May at the official opening of the exhibition at the City’s Civic Centre.
Winners included Emma Jansson for her portrait entitled “Child of Tibet” in the Youth category and Jonnine Kaiser for the image “Jump!” in the City of Melville Resident category, while the work “Swan Musings” by Sharon Officer won the Judges’ Choice award. Awards categories also included Acrylic, Mixed Media, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Sculpture/3D, Textile, Watercolour, and Work on Paper.
Community Development Officer (Arts) Hannah Katarski said the City was delighted with the calibre and variety of entries, from both emerging and established WA artists. “The panel of judges, which included Digby de Bruin, Bridget Waters and Di Taylor, had to make some tough decisions as overall they were impressed by the insightful entries across all categories. Winners received a prize of $1000 each, while $1500 was awarded to the Judges’ Choice Winner, Sharon Officer,” she said.
Deputy Mayor Patricia Phelan, who opened the exhibition, said she congratulated all winners, who had contributed to a unique and inspiring showcase of art from across the state as well as the local area. “When I am out and about in the community, I am always impressed by the amazing talent we have here in the City. The Art Awards, which are one of the most prestigious events in the City’s cultural calendar, are a fantastic way of acknowledging this,” she said.
The exhibition will run until Saturday, 6 June. It will be open to the public from 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and from 1.00pm to 4.00pm on weekends. The exhibition will be held at the City of Melville Civic Centre, Second Floor, 10 Almondbury Road, Booragoon.
