Art Awards Set to Add a Splash of Colour to City
The City of Melville invites artists who live in Western Australia to enter works in the 2009 Art Awards, to be held at the City of Melville Civic Centre in May and June.
Community Development Officer (Arts) Hannah Katarski said the first 280 entries received would be accepted and exhibited. “With 13 categories in the competition we expect to receive a wide variety of unique and inspiring artworks,” she said. “We encourage both professional and emerging artists to apply. With a $14,000 non-acquisitive prize pool, it is definitely a competition worth entering.”
The exhibition, which will be officially opened at 6.00pm on Friday, 29 May 2009, will run until Saturday, 6 June. It will be open to the public from 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and from 1.00pm to 4.00pm on weekends. The exhibition will be held at the City of Melville Civic Centre, Second Floor, 10 Almondbury Road, Booragoon.
Categories for the 2009 Art Awards include Acrylic, Mixed Media, Oil, Pastel, Photography, Sculpture/3D, Textile, Watercolour, Work on Paper, Youth (ages 15 to 21), People’s Choice, Work by City of Melville Resident, and Judges’ Choice.
Mayor Russell Aubrey said the works to be displayed at the Art Awards would be sure to impress the City’s residents and visitors. “This exhibition will encourage both established and upcoming artists to showcase the very best of their work, whatever it may be,” he said. “It’s a great chance for community members to experience some unique and inspiring art from across the state and also from the local area.”
The winners across the 13 categories will be determined on Monday, 25 May 2009 when the panel of judges will make their final decision, to be announced at the official opening.
