Ardross West Selected for Underground Power

Published Date: 24 December 2010, 12:00 AM

The City of Melville has today (Friday, 24 December 2010) applauded the Office of Energy’s decision to include Ardross West in Round 5 of the State Underground Power Program.

The Ardross West area can be broadly defined as that part of Ardross which is west of Riseley Street and comprises approximately 800 properties.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Steve Cope said, “The selection of Ardross West to proceed to the design phase of the State Underground Power Program will benefit many residents.

“Ardross West has been selected from nine proposals submitted by the City of Melville to the Office of Energy to be considered for inclusion in the program.

“Five of those were accepted to proceed for assessment. Along with Ardross West, these were Ardross East, North Bicton and two projects in Melville, south of Kitchener Road.

“The selection of the winning projects is undertaken by the Office of Energy using a set of criteria that includes system reliability, feasibility and resident support.

“The City of Melville has been a consistent participant and supporter of the State Underground Power Program and would welcome additional funding for the program from the State.”

The State Underground Power Program is funded: 25 per cent by the State Government and 25 per cent by Western Power. The City of Melville funds 50 per cent of the program and then recovers the funding from property owners.

Those City of Melville areas which have previously received underground power are: Applecross, Mount Pleasant, part of Booragoon and part of Bicton. Attadale South is currently under construction.

Submissions for underground power in the suburb of Melville were presented to the Office of Energy for consideration. The Office of Energy undertook surveys of two of the Melville surveys, North Bicton and two projects in Ardross to determine the level of support amongst residents. There were 20 projects surveyed similarly throughout the Perth Metro area. The Office Of Energy selects the successful projects using a range of criteria including the level of resident support. At this time the successful project in the City of Melville was Ardross West. The City of Melville will continue to push for underground power to the remainder of the City of Melville including the suburb of Melville that still have overhead power.

Is Palmyra likely to be included in any submissions for underground power in the near future?

When will Kardinya get underground power? Given that newer parts of Kardinya (Sommerville Estate) and areas around Kardinya (Winthrop and Murdoch) are already underground, it would seem to make sense for the rest of Kardinya to be considered? To date, it appears like the more 'exclusive' older areas have been getting the priority funding for this.

How about FINALLY putting underground power into Alfred Cove. The old, sagging powerlines and the leaning posts are getting simply too old to cope.

I couldn't agree more. Not only would it solve that problem but it would also resolve the issue regarding the substation on Kitchener road and prevent the tremendous amount of discord with that project.

I am perlexed how Ardross West got selected over Ardross East that borders both Mt Pleasant and Booragoon which both have underground power. Surely it was the natural choice to commence the underground power program where it last finished.
This makes no sense to me at all. This is either really poor planning, or the selection process is seriously flawed.
Not happy at all that Ardross East must wait until who knows when to get underground power!

Agree with previous comment that it makes no sense (other than residents no willing to support it as much - which I doubt) to not select Ardross East as the progression of the work. I would like to know how many more years do I have to wait and is the cost going to be higher?

I think that it is absurd to bypass Ardross East and do this patchwork implementation

The process of determining which areas are to recieve underground power is through a process driven by the Office of Energy. Periodically the Office of Energy will call for expressions of interest from Local Authorities for proposals to be considered for inclusion in the program. The City of Melville recently presented nine submissions to be considered for inclusion in the program. From the nine submissions five were selected to go out to survey and from these five Ardross West was selected to be included in the program.

Guidelines provided by the Office of Energy determine project sizes ie, the number of lots etc. This often means for example that larger suburbs such as Melville will be represented by three submissions to meet the guideline requirements.

If and when the Office of Energy calls for expressions of interest for Round 6 of the State Underground Program the City of Meville will consider all areas within the City of Melville that currently have overhead power to be included in a submission.

When will Attadale west of Wichman Rd go underground?

If and when the Office of Energy calls for expressions of interest for Round 6 of the State Underground Power Program then the City of melville will re-submit Attadale North (being that portion of Attadale north of Wichmann Road) along with submissions for other areas of the City of Melville that currently have overhead power.

The City of Melville has no information at this time as to if and when Round 6 will be announced.
