A Season for Giving Supports Sick Children and Families

Published Date: 22 November 2011, 12:00 AM

Thursday, 1 December 2011 will mark the start of A Season for Giving, which this year aims to raise $30,000 for sick children spending Christmas in hospital.

To achieve this goal, the City of Melville’s Lifestyle Services has asked residents to give generously and donate a Christmas gift in support of Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC).

RMHC is an independent, non-profit organisation that supports seriously ill children and their families, while the children are undergoing treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Last year, the City of Melville’s Lifestyle Services raised a total of approximately $21,000 worth of cash, goods and services.

Mayor Russell Aubrey said, “Brooke Walton is a four-year-old girl from the Wheatbelt and this lovely, brave child has Leukaemia – but fortunately she and her family are able to stay together thanks to the child-friendly accommodation at Ronald McDonald House.”

“This saves the family enormous expense and reduces the stress and worry which would be caused by a separation.

"I encourage residents to support people like the Walton family by checking the ‘wish lists’ at both the Melville Recreation Centre and the Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre and donating a household item or gift voucher at the Christmas trees.

“All donated gifts will be distributed to the worthwhile RMHC charity and donors will be rewarded with the knowledge they have helped seriously ill children and their families.”

A Season for Giving will be accepting gifts at the Melville Recreation Centre, Stock Road, Melville and the Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre, Marmion Street, Booragoon from Thursday, 1 December to Friday 23, December 2011.

Requested items include: cutlery and crockery; soup; tinned tuna; biscuits; dishwashing tablets and liquid; tomato sauce; paper rolls; cake and muffin mixes; dry pasta; pasta sauce; and mini toiletries. Gift vouchers are also needed for: toy stores; restaurants; movies; concerts; sporting events; music; and book stores.

RMHC's programs include: Ronald McDonald Houses; Learning Programs; Family Rooms; Cord Blood Bank; Family Retreats and Grants.
