A Positive PHAZE for Melville Youth
The Leeming Skate Park is once again set to be transformed into a work of art as part of the PHAZE 4 urban art project.
Thirteen local youth will unleash their creativity on the park on Sunday, 25 November from 10.30am to 4.00pm, assisted by first-time PHAZE leader and inspiring urban artist Darren Hutchens.
Community Development Officer – Youth, Jo McKay said the PHAZE project had received some great feedback from the community. “Parents and community members often stop to watch the process on the day,” she said. “The project has been met with positive feedback from onlookers of all ages and it has given the young people who are involved a sense of pride for what they have worked so hard to achieve.”
The project, which occurs on the last Sunday of every month excluding winter, has given participants aged 12 to 24 years a legal outlet for their art, while giving them an opportunity to work with some exciting urban artists.
The PHAZE project began after local skate park users approached the City of Melville with a 250-signature petition, requesting a legal graffiti wall. The first paint off, known as PHAZE 1, took place in May 2007 with subsequent projects happening in June and October.
The PHAZE project will take a break during December due to Christmas and New Year and will resume in January 2008.
Young people interested in taking part in PHAZE 5 in January are urged to get their names on the waiting list now as places fill up quickly. To sign up or for more information, contact Ms McKay on 9364 0669 or email jmckay@melville.wa.gov.au.
