$5 million upgrade for Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre

Published Date: 18 December 2007, 11:43 AM

An exciting $5 million upgrade to the Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre (MAFC) in Booragoon will create a wider variety of services and improve the centre’s capacity, according to the City of Melville.

The redevelopment is expected to be finished by September 2011 and comes in response to the increased popularity of MAFC, which was visited by 447,276 people in 2006/07 and later received an estimated 660,000 people in 2009/10.

Chief Executive Officer Dr Shayne Silcox said the upgrade had arrived at the right time.

“The Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre is almost at full capacity and, as a result, the time has come to reinvest in this centre,” he said.

“The centre has a high level of passing traffic and is closely located to one of Perth’s busiest shopping centres. In fact, it is located within a five kilometre radius of 95 per cent of the City of Melville’s population.

“This initiative is about the responsible development of a community facility, which services a large and diverse group of residents.

“The changes will include a larger gymnasium, a group cycling facility, an interactive water playground, a dedicated room for wellness programs (such as yoga and pilates), expanded toilet and changing facilities, physically interactive gaming for teenagers, additional office space; and the installation of solar panel heating for the pool and building.

“What we are planning to achieve is a facility which has something to offer everyone across the City from Mums and Dads, to young children, teenagers and seniors.”

The tender for the MAFC redevelopment will be advertised shortly. People with enquiries should contact City of Melville Manager Health & Lifestyle Todd Cahoon on 9364 0809.

I use to take my daughter to the Leeming Rec Centre for swimming lessons - until it was closed for 'an upgrade'. Will the Melville Centre also be totally stuffed up? Where will I take my daughter then?

Thank you for your comments. The upgrade at Melville Aquatic Fitness Centre does not include any of the pool areas and it is anticpated that swimming lessons and access to the pool will continue as per normal during the redevelopment with minimal or no impact in these areas. The reception area and entrance to the centre will change to allow for upgrades at reception but this will also not impact on the pool areas.

My how the worm turns! What hypocracy. It's a pity the same view wasn't applied to Leeming Rec Centre some years ago - it too may have had an increase in patronage if it had been adequately maintained and promoted by CoM.

If the MAFC is 'almost at full capacity' as indicated by CoM CEO Dr Shayne Silcox, then perhaps the Council should not be making it any bigger, but instead invest those funds in facilities in other suburbs so that essential community infrastructure is spread around rather than being concentrated in one area (which increases other risks) - even if 95% of the population are within 5 km of the MAFC.

There are rumours going around that this redevelopment is going to cause one or both of the local swimming clubs to lose their ability to train and race at the centre. Is this true. Are the swimming clubs going to be pushed out?

The redevelopment is mainly looking at much needed improvements on the dry side of the facility. In terms of Aquatics there will also be the introduction of an interactive water playground in the leisure pool courtyard and installation of solar heating for the pools.

The project will have minimal impact on the operations or access to the swimming pools and certainly will not cause clubs or groups who use the pools to lose their ability to use the facilities.

I take it by lack of reply that the rumours are correct.

When do you anticipate work to begin and how long the group fitness classes will be impacted with the upgrade. Are there plans to add more classes to the Melville Recreation Centre while the Aquatic Centre is being renovated.

Due to the upgrade most likely resulting in classes not running, will you be offering anything to members who will not be able to use the facilities during this period. For example, freezing the account during the renovation period.

Thanks.

I am sure this will be a fantastic upgrade so far as the gymnasium is concerned, however will adding to the pool facilities for lap swimmers ever be on the agenda?

Asside from the load of swimmers from clubs and vacation swim classes, the MAFC 50m pool at peak traffic times (before and after work) is bordering on dangerous. This pool is servicing a very large population and while it is kept beautifully clean, there really is a need for another 50m pool in the area.

Thank you for your suggestion regarding increasing the pool space. It has been noted and will be considered for future planning of recreation facilities at MAFC.
Thank you for also providing feedback regarding the cleanliness of the facility, the Centre strives to focus on this area and it is pleasing to hear feedback of this nature.

I'm delighted about plans to upgrade MAFC as many classes held at the Melville Rec Centre appeal but seem too far away, MAFC is much closer to home. I hope Tai Chi will be offered by the same group that have offered it at other City locales (including the late Leeming rec centre).

The increase in activity was likely the result of closing down Leeming Rec - which was a real shame. MAC is too busy to cope with the amount of swimming lessons for kids, I can never get the lesson times I need.
The water playground does sound like a good idea.

I'm glad you'll be investing towards a childrens interactive pool - i hope it will be similar/better than Beatty Park so we won't have to travel as far :) The change rooms definitely require an upgrade. I'm looking forward to it. thank you

Swimming pools

I was disapointed to find that the last upgrade left us without an outdoor swimming pool. It is much more appealing to swim in the fresh air than with the chlorine fumes trapped under the roof of the indoor one. I used to use the pool regularly but have virtually given up since we lost the outdoor pool.
Also the pressure on the 2 pools is enormous, with training, schools and others. We really need an outdoor pool for general swimming. Can this be included in the upgrade?

Upgrade Schedule

Posted by Jon at 14 July 2011, 01:28 PM
Given that the upgrade started later than originally planned, what is the current schedule for the work to be completed. I noticed on the website, it says that the work is on schedule but the original schedule is no longer on the website or a revised schedule has not been posted.

In addition, the orignally plan was to conduct the upgrade in two phases. Is this still the case or is the whole upgrade now in one phase.

Thanks.
