‘Reno for a Cause’ Receives a City of Melville Community Grant
The South City Church’s enthusiastic ‘Reno for a Cause’ team embarked on their latest backyard blitz in August to transform the Zonta House Refuge, which supports local women in need.
After receiving a City of Melville community grant, the South City Church and Melville Volunteer Resource Centre (MVRC) joined forces to perform another remarkable ‘Reno for a Cause’ project for the worthy community organisation.
Manager Annette Chivers said the staff and residents at Zonta House were overwhelmed by the community support and the generosity of local businesses. “The willingness of the volunteers was fabulous,” she said. “The students and church volunteers performed a complete makeover at the house and have created a wonderful, tranquil haven for our staff and residents.”
More than 60 men and women from the church together with students from Melville Senior High School, worked on the project using materials supplied by Bunnings in Myaree and plants from Benara Nursery to revamp the gardens at the women’s refuge. Designed by local landscape architect Owen Summerville, the project involved building a deck and barbecue shelter and planting more than 200 new plants and a lawn area.
It was the fourth ‘Reno for a Cause’ project undertaken by the South City Church and coordinated by the Council-run MVRC. Past projects involved MVRC volunteers helping to redesign a Palmyra resident’s backyard for better wheelchair access, renovating the Headwest premises in Alfred Cove and upgrading the gardens at the Norwich Hostel in Bull Creek.
South City Church’s Ken Lee said the ‘Reno for a Cause’ team was a dedicated and talented group of people. “The MVRC and South City Church have been working in partnership for some time now working on projects that add value to the community,” he said.
Zonta House is the headquarters for a number of services provided by the Zonta Association, which has helped to house more than 5000 women in need since 1984. The MVRC’s role is to link volunteers, their abilities and passions with community groups, schools and local businesses to help build a strong, healthy and sustainable community.
