The launch of the City of Melville’s new health promotion DVD titled ‘6’ has had an overwhelming response from the community.

Held at Hoyts Garden City in early September, the launch was attended by about 200 people and met with a high level of interest and enthusiasm.

Targeting teenage males, ‘6’ aims to assist young men cope with some of the emotional health issues they may face during adolescence such as self esteem, relationships, sexuality, crime, suicide and drink driving.

Applecross Senior High School Year 10 Student Chris Young said he found ‘6’ to be very in-depth and hard-hitting. “I really thought it touched on some of the main issues that teenage boys deal with,” he said. “I can see how these six stories could be associated with some of my friends and it really could help them to know what to do and who to go to in these situations.”

The DVD was developed through close collaboration with students from Melville and Applecross senior high schools. Male students discussed their thoughts and feelings on many issues in a safe environment away from female students. This allowed the male students to openly discuss their point of view, as it was observed that females had a different opinion on many of the issues.

Applecross Senior High Health Coordinator Jan Michell said after viewing ‘6’, she could see herself using the DVD with her upper school students, to help discuss issues relevant to both teenage males and females. “The issues covered, including relationships with peers and parents, sexuality and drugs, are all relevant to teenagers today,” she said. “The DVD is topical, realistic and well presented and I would recommend it to anyone working with youth as a stimulus for further discussion.”

Mayor Katherine Jackson said the DVD would be a great asset in helping young men to deal with many of the issues they faced during adolescence. “Showing this information in such a powerful, modern and realistic way is an effective method of getting information out to today’s young men,” she said. “This will be a useful and effective tool in many classrooms.”
